Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles is expected to post strong Q2FY27 revenue and profit growth, driven by 43% volume expansion. However, rising input costs, margin pressures and divergent brokerage estimates remain key investor concerns ahead of results and management commentary.

Loading...×Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles (TMCV) is expected to report strong year-on-year (YoY) growth in revenue and profitability in the September quarter, supported by a robust increase in domestic commercial vehicle volumes, according to top brokerages. However, rising input costs and pressure on operating margins are likely to remain key concerns for investors.

The company recorded a volume growth of around 43% YoY in Q2FY27, outperforming peers despite geopolitical headwinds. Brokerage estimates suggest that the strong volume expansion is likely to drive revenue growth of around 44-45% YoY, although the extent to which this translates into operating profit growth will depend on input cost inflation, pricing actions and the product mix.

JM Financial expects TMCV's revenue to rise 43.6% YoY to Rs 24,218.4 crore, while Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL) projects a 45.4% increase to Rs 24,638.1 crore. Adjusted profit after tax (PAT) estimates also differ, with JM Financial expecting 44.3% growth and MOFSL projecting a 25.7% increase.

Margins are expected to remain under pressure despite a net price hike of 2.5% implemented since July. While JM Financial expects EBITDA margins to improve sequentially, MOFSL anticipates a sharper decline, making input costs, pricing realisation and the sustainability of volume growth key monitorables.

Volume growth remains a key earnings driver

    Live Events

TMCV's domestic commercial vehicle volumes are expected to remain the primary driver of its Q2FY27 performance, with both brokerages highlighting strong demand and an improvement over the year-ago period.

JM Financial estimates volumes at 1,35,114 units, up 42.7% YoY and 24.5% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ), significantly ahead of its earlier estimates.

MOFSL projects total India volumes of 1,37,339 units, representing growth of 43% YoY and around 26.3% sequentially over 1,08,700 units in Q1FY27.

According to MOFSL, light commercial vehicles (LCVs) led the expansion, with volumes rising 53.1% YoY, while medium and heavy commercial vehicles (MHCVs) recorded growth of 31%.

The strong performance indicates broad-based volume expansion, with LCVs contributing more to the growth momentum. The increase in volumes is expected to support revenue growth and operating leverage, although the impact on profitability will depend on the vehicle mix, realisations and input costs.

Revenue growth expected to remain strong

Brokerages expect revenue growth to outpace the broader volume expansion marginally, supported by higher vehicle sales and improved sequential performance.

JM Financial estimates revenue at Rs 24,218.4 crore, up 43.6% YoY and 25.3% QoQ. The brokerage expects strong volume performance to help TMCV more than offset rising input cost inflation during the quarter.

MOFSL projects net operating income of Rs 24,638.1 crore, an increase of 45.4% YoY and 27% QoQ from Rs 19,406 crore in Q1FY27.

The difference between the two estimates reflects variations in their volume and realisation assumptions. MOFSL estimates average realisation at Rs 17.94 lakh per vehicle in Q2FY27, up 2.5% sequentially from Rs 17.85 lakh in Q1FY27. However, its estimates indicate that average realisation will remain below the year-ago level of Rs 17.50 lakh.

Margins likely to remain under pressure

Operating margins are expected to be a key area of focus in TMCV's Q2FY27 results, as the benefit of higher volumes and pricing actions may be partly offset by rising input costs.

JM Financial expects EBITDA to increase 36.9% YoY to Rs 2,843.4 crore, compared with Rs 2,077 crore in Q2FY26. It projects EBITDA margins at 11.7%, down 60 basis points (bps) YoY but up 50 bps QoQ from 11.3% in Q1FY27.

MOFSL has a more cautious margin outlook. It expects EBITDA to rise 18% YoY to Rs 2,583.4 crore, while margins are projected to decline 120 bps QoQ to 10.5%, from 11.7% in Q1FY27.

The brokerage expects margin pressure to persist despite the net price hike of 2.5% implemented since July. Its estimates also factor in higher raw material costs, with raw material expenses projected to increase to 72.5% of sales in Q2FY27 from 70.7% in Q1FY27.

The divergence in margin estimates highlights the uncertainty around the extent to which volume growth and pricing actions can offset input cost inflation. The trajectory of commodity costs, the effectiveness of price increases and the product mix will therefore be important in determining operating profitability.

Profit growth expected to remain healthy

Despite the expected pressure on margins, both brokerages anticipate YoY growth in adjusted PAT in Q2FY27, supported by higher volumes and revenue.

JM Financial expects adjusted PAT to rise 44.3% YoY to Rs 1,940.2 crore, compared with Rs 1,345 crore in Q2FY26. Sequentially, profit is projected to increase 19.2% from Rs 1,628 crore in Q1FY27.

MOFSL estimates adjusted PAT at Rs 1,690.1 crore, up 25.7% YoY from Rs 1,345 crore in Q2FY26. On a sequential basis, profit is expected to increase 5.4% from Rs 1,603 crore in Q1FY27.

The estimates point to a difference in the two brokerages' expectations for the translation of revenue growth into earnings. JM Financial's higher PAT estimate is accompanied by a stronger EBITDA forecast, while MOFSL factors in a sharper sequential decline in margins.

MOFSL's estimates also indicate that EBITDA is likely to decline 3% in FY27 to Rs 9,922.3 crore, despite projected annual revenue growth of 12.7%. It expects adjusted PAT to decline 2% to Rs 6,427.7 crore in FY27, highlighting the potential impact of margin pressures on the full-year earnings trajectory.

Pricing actions and cost pressures in focus

TMCV's pricing actions will be important in assessing whether the company can protect profitability amid input cost inflation.

MOFSL notes that the company has implemented a net price hike of 2.5% since July. Its estimates indicate a 2.5% QoQ increase in average realisation to Rs 17.94 lakh per vehicle in Q2FY27.

ALSO READ: Deepinder Goyal’s Dark.ai could be Eternal’s dark horse, but is it too early to bet?

However, higher realisations may not fully offset cost pressures in the near term. MOFSL expects raw material costs to account for 72.5% of sales in Q2FY27, compared with 70.7% in Q1FY27. The brokerage's projected decline in EBITDA margins suggests that the benefit of pricing actions could be outweighed by input cost inflation and changes in the cost structure.

Investors will therefore track the extent to which price increases are sustained, whether further pricing action becomes necessary and how the company manages its cost base as volumes expand.

        Brokerage outlook and valuations

The brokerages differ in their assessment of TMCV's near-term earnings prospects, particularly on operating margins and the extent of profit growth.

JM Financial's estimates point to stronger earnings momentum, with adjusted PAT expected to rise 44.3% YoY and EBITDA margins projected to improve sequentially. MOFSL expects more moderate profit growth and a sharper sequential margin contraction, while also reducing its full-year earnings estimates.

MOFSL has retained its Neutral rating on Tata Motors CV, with a target price of Rs 422 against its cited market price of Rs 415. This implies an upside of approximately 2%.

The brokerage has cut its earnings per share (EPS) estimates for FY27 and FY28 by 10% and 3%, respectively, reflecting a more cautious view of the earnings outlook.

Management commentary and growth outlook in focus

Beyond the headline numbers, investors will look for clarity on domestic demand, the sustainability of volume growth, pricing actions, input cost inflation and the outlook for operating margins.

The key question for TMCV, brokerages said, will be whether strong volume growth can translate into sustained earnings expansion despite rising costs. The divergence in brokerage estimates suggests that margin performance, rather than revenue growth alone, could determine the market's response to the Q2FY27 results.
